Ski resorts near Los Angeles: how to choose

Published 2026-11-01 · ROVE

If you live in LA and want to ski without staying overnight, you have three real options: Mountain High in Wrightwood, the three mountains of Big Bear Mountain Resort (Snow Valley, Snow Summit and Bear Mountain), and Mt. Baldy. For a big mountain with more reliable snow, the drive is to Mammoth Mountain, which plans to open November 13, 2026.

Picking a Big Bear mountain

Big Bear points beginners and families to Snow Valley, which has a tube park and night sessions. Snow Summit is its pick for intermediate skiers and families and has the lake views. Bear Mountain covers beginner to advanced terrain and has the only halfpipes in Southern California.

Adult day tickets cost $89 to $169 depending on the date, and one ticket works at all three mountains when they are all open. A night session add-on is $19. Source: Big Bear lift tickets page, checked November 1, 2026.

Drive times

Weekend traffic and chain controls swing these drives so much that we are not quoting minutes until we can measure them consistently. Check the forecast and road status on the ROVE Big Bear page before you leave, and carry chains on storm days as California law requires when controls are posted.

When the snow is best

Southern California resorts open on machine-made snow and need storms for natural cover. NOAA's winter outlook from October 15, 2026 favors a wetter than average December through February across the southern U.S., including California, because of a strong El Niño. Wetter odds do not guarantee more snow. Source: NOAA. ROVE shows a 15-day snowfall forecast for each of these resorts.
